Friday, September 24 is School & Media Day
It is time to reserve your site at the 2021 Fort Atkinson Rendezvous. The Rendezvous will be run by the Friends of Fort Atkinson Rendezvous committee, volunteers from the Fort Atkinson community, with the assistance of Park Ranger Andy Roach.
The 2021 Rendezvous theme is “Frontier Scout”. Cooking contest will be one theme this year – “Main dish”.
The Fort Atkinson Rendezvous is sponsored by the Friends of Fort Atkinson, City of Fort Atkinson, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Parks Bureau and Preserves Board. The goal of this event is to provide a quality interpretive event portraying the 1840s Iowa frontier life. The site of this rendezvous is inside and around an actual military fort that was active in Iowa from 1840-1849.
School/Media day is on Friday during the final set-up day. Most school groups begin arriving about 9:30 a.m. and are leaving around 2:00 p.m. Participation on this day is optional.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday we are open at no charge to the public. Saturday hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
We consider demonstrations of pioneer craft a very vital part of our event. Even though we do not provide stipends for participating, we do not charge a fee as we do to all other categories of participants. Artisans are allowed to sell, but we do ask that you have some project in progress that you work on intermittently during the event. You are most likely very aware how much the public appreciates watching someone demonstrate their craftsmanship.
Regarding Trade Blankets – Authenticity to the 1840’s time period is of prime importance. Trade Guidelines Please remember this is a Rendezvous. If not from the rendezvous era, please do not try to sell it. No items made of plastic or nylon. No plastic or modern priced stickers or dry erase boards. No funky colored items. (Moccasins, feathers, furs, etc.) No rubber band guns. No hematite zingers. No modern items. No collectable dolls. No flea market type items. (ceramic figurines, or any figurines that depict unicorns, medieval, Far East etc. subjects, crystal balls, dyed rabbit feet, mandalas, and all other questionable flea market items) Maps, books and artwork MAY be sold if they are relevant to the fur trade. CD’s can be sold, just not openly displayed. Historic nylon flags may be sold, just not openly displayed. If you have items that are covered in plastic, please remove one as a display and have the rest out of view. Please be courteous and cooperative and follow these trade guidelines to help ensure a quality event. If you choose to participate in this event you are expected to adhere to these rules.
Iowa Sales Tax Permits are required for anyone selling merchandise. Please provide this on the registration form. If you do not have a tax permit, please indicate you need a temporary permit. If you did not report your sales for last year’s Rendezvous and pay the sales tax due (6% + 1% local), you will not be allowed to attend this year.
Site registrations will be taken according to the first 100 COMPLETE applications received. The enclosed map shows the revised camp site numbering, sizes, and locations. Please note that all
Artisan/Craftsperson/Traders/Military/Buckskinners sites will be the same as in previous years if possible. If there is someone who you would like to camp next to, write it on the neighbor site line and we will TRY to get you as close as possible. Send completed registration form with your $45 check or money order made out to Friends of Fort Atkinson. Deadline to secure your desired site is August 1st. In the event you need to cancel, notify us before September 1 so we can send you a refund.
Camp set up will be allowed after 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, as long as your site is reserved in advance.
NOTE: All firewood will be furnished. The DNR will NOT allow anyone to bring their own firewood to the Rendezvous because of the Emerald Ash Borer threat.
Reminder: If you have pets in camp you MUST keep them on a leash and clean up after them.
