City Committees

The Fort Atkinson City Museum collects, interprets, preserves, and displays collections of historical artifacts from throughout the Fort Atkinson community, surrounding rural area, and Winneshiek County.  It also collects and displays historical artifacts from the 1840's era of the military post of Fort Atkinson, the Turkey River Indian Subagency, and of the Winnebago/Hochunk Indians that occupied the '"neutral ground" in the 1840's.  These temporary/permanent displays create opportunities for residents and visitors to explore, understand, and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the region.

Members of the Fort Atkinson City Museum Committee:

The Fort Atkinson Historic Preservation Commission promotes the historic town, rural area, and history of Winneshiek County through the preservation of historic and archaeological sites and the collection of artifacts and records.  It promotes public education projects through community and school visitation presentations, programs and tours.  It enhances understanding of the rich and diverse cultural heritage and history of the region by bringing in native American speakers, promoting archaeological investigations of the area, and supporting cultural resources field schools being held in the region.
